Same 8 hours daily, 5 days a week in the USA, but in the Philippines some companies require 6-day workweeks, some require half day work on Saturdays, but some companies, especially big multinationals have only 5-day workweeks. Vacation leave credits in the USA are more generous. In the Philippines, a worker gets entitled to VL only after finishing probation, and only gets pro-rata credits thereafter. Big companies add leave credits to employees who have chalked up a 5-year tenure, adding an extra day a week for every year at work. Thus, where I used to work, I had 15 days annual vacation leave after working for 8 years. But if we add all the holidays and the special non-working holidays decreed by the government, we might just be even with our US counterparts !

The main difference is that in the US you work and in the Philippines you dont.

Depends on who you work for. Anything over 40 hours is overtime but some manage to avoid that. You have to work steady if not hard. Safety is a big factor. Some give vacation some don't . It isn't the law that you do. The pay is the biggest difference. You are by law paid at least minimum wage but people who work for it will make more. Qualified people start out much higher. There are incentives like commissions to get you to work better and earn more. It's the pay system that keeps the Pinoy from advancing.

Work is the same anywhere in the world. It takes so much force to move a certain weight from point X to point Y. Wages and benefits vary from place to place, from employer to employer. There might be employers who adjust their work clock 20 minutes in the evening*, and then adjust is to be late 30 minutes in the closing hours. One cannot question that that clock is wrong. If you do get it in your head to rectify the clock, it is in violation of company policy to exploit the labour force as much as possible. * evening - this should be "morning", rather. To enable them to deduct something from wages, for being "late".

Generally the same. Although hiring & selection is not the same & in the Philippines there are lot of holidays (with pay) & there are mid-year, 13th month bonus pay, which obviously you did not work but get paid for (some even have14th month, 15th month, nth month as well as a Christmas bonus)--which I all miss....

Would a laptop from the Philippines work in the U.K

Would a laptop from the Philippines work in the U.K?
My father is going to sent a laptop over with my brother for college work etc, but it MUST be wireless and I MUST be able to play DVDs and CDs etc on it, like will it be 100% suitable for use over here in the U.K? I'm doing college work so I need to be able to access online and emails. I also need to be able to play revision CDs on it, and be able to watch DVDs on it that will be helpful to my course. Its for college so iTunes and MSN Messenger aren't needed. Also, I have only ever had Windows, will a laptop from the Philippines have Windows, or some other operating system? Could it play copies, or can no laptop play copies, I've never had one, just stuck to computers.

Yes, the only differences between the Phillipines laptop and a UK laptop are: 1) Power plug is different shape, but you can buy a plug adaptor (no converter needed, the power supply can adjust to the voltage itself) 2) Might have Philipino-language Windows installed. You can just change this back to English in the language settings.

Yes. The laptop would work absolutely fine. But you might need a universal power plug to connect your laptop charger to electricity. This you can buy at any electricity shop. The only thing you might need to do (though even without that you would be able to do all your work), is to change Region and Language Setting. But that is very easy to do. :)

Laptop from Philippines are actually working anywhere in the world. :D Laptop from Philippines has a complete Operating system and softwares. It has wireless card for internet. The best way is to ask your father about the specs of a laptop that he is going to send.
4 :
yes it will work :D

The only time a magic jack would work in the Philippines is if they have a high speed internet otherwise you will get a jamming connection.
2 :
Magic Jack works fine in the Philippines anywhere that you have reasonable internet connection speed (like SmartBro). I know many people using Magic Jack. They are even being sold here in the Philippines (at a ridiculous markup from the US price ;-)

im here in manila and we do have magic jack and we're using it almost everyday... our internet connection: smart broadband

you can buy an iphone 3gs or 4 from globe (the exclusive distributor of iphone in the philippines) but it would take like a month to arrive becos the phone is still going to be shipped from the u.s. you can use it in new zealand when you have it unlocked. all iphones are designed in the u.s. but manufactured in china so i don't know what you're talking about it not coming with wifi. all iphones have wifi. edit:i'm sorry you're right about the china iphones not having wifi. see link for details: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/08/iphone-china/ but the ones sold in the philippines are not crippled, to answer your question.
